A guide: Eagles Nest Friendship list explained

Several years ago Michelle Virkler and Gene Engle established the Eagles Nest Friendship list to facilitate buying, selling and renting Eagles Nest timeshare units with other owners. When Michelle decided to stop, Don Nixon thought it was helpful and volunteered to keep it active.

If this is the first message you have received, simply click "reply" which confirms you received it.

Please include your name, telephone contact and week(s) and unit # you own and you will receive periodic updates and Eagles Nest news.

At some point, if you own multiple weeks, it may encourage trades to avoid a move to a different unit wasting much of a Friday of your time at Marco. However, management now helps you with those moves so it isn't as much hassle.

When new listings are submitted, we usually check current listings and send details to those on the friendship list. All current listings are posted at:
http://www.radioad.org/whmbtv/classifieds/listings.php?catcode=Timeshare
(You can click on the website link following)

If you have a unit to rent, buy, sell or trade, it's easier if you send us details. We post your listing to fit our format to sort correctly. Include your e-mail and telephone contact so interested parties may easily contact you directly.

The list is not affiliated with Hilton and there is no reason to avoid any other means to find someone who may have an interest in what you are listing.

The "Exp" is the date a listing automatically expires. You should get a system generated e-mail the day before your listing expires to remind you to renew it.(*) If details are still correct, simply click reply. That sends us detail to reset the expiration which extends your listing for another 15 days. Clicking reply makes it easier for us to update your listing. (For sale listings usually expire on the 30th day of the month)

The identification number is automatically included so you need not add any message unless you want to change the price or other details. Since these are essentially sent to about 700 other owners, who know how the Eagles Nest time share works, the only pertinent details are week number, unit and price. Listings are then posted in sequential week number order: for rent, for sale and wanted

Since some owners also have timeshares at other properties, we accept those listings, including units an Eagles Nest owner has available at the Marco Beach Ocean Resort next door.  To ignore any of those listings simply add "Eag" in the search box above "Name/business"

When you are in Marco and talk to your friends, see if they are on the friendship list. If they are not, simply send us their contact information. With more owners on the list, the better response you will get.

Currently there is no charge for owners to subscribe to the list or post listings. However, at one point when an owner advised the front desk persons of available units, they were given a "spiff" which I think was $25. If you make an arrangement through the Friendship List, feel free to carry on the tradition for any amount you think appropriate.

There is a fee for non subscribers to submit listings.

The last time I checked, current rental information through Eagles Nest is at this link: (don't rely on this being current)
www.floridagrandvacations.com/marcoisland/eaglesnest_rates.php

Note: If you decide to go through Hilton's program to either rent or sell your unit, you sign an exclusive contract with them and must pay the fee regardless of who initiates a deal. Often transactions through that source may be less hassle.

Vacation planning calendar for Eagles Nest Fri to Fri is included at this link:  (don't rely on this being current)
www.hgvc.com/hoa_calendar/VacationPlanningCalendar.pdf

(*)This is a typical system generated message so you may want to make sure future messages don't go to your junk mail folder.

Listings are automatically posted on several other databases which is why “Eagles Nest and Marco Island” are included in listing details. The phone number listed makes direct contact with the owner on the Friendship List so it does not go through Eagles Nest or Hilton Grand Vacations and is not affiliated with either of those entities.

Friendship List information for each individual is not available to anyone who does not have authorization and is not posted or public. Currently there are more than 600 names on the list and each has a unique id#. If you want to verify someone is on the list, ask for the number and send it to us.

When new information for the Eagles Nest Friendship list is received, it’s posted and periodically an e-mail is sent to those on the list.(*) This e-mail notice is no longer system generated. It will be sent from Don. If you "unsubscribe" to it, you will no longer get any of those updates, although you may still receive system generated notices.

If you are new to the list, you should receive your first e-mail in a day or so. System generated messages are not monitored for receipt and some folks report they do not consistently receive them. I have set up a separate mail to include the updates.(*) You can respond to either one if you have a question.

However, if you select unsubscribe on that list, your e-mail will permanently be deleted.

If your e-mail address changes, you will no longer receive updated messages.

Your submissions are edited for consistency and style, which is standard English with capital letters and lower case as appropriate.

If it's tedious to go through all current listings, you can use the search feature to find specific weeks or for rent or for sale items. Remember to hit the search key at the top of the page and at the bottom right of the top box with fields in it.

To submit information, or if you have questions, simply hit reply. There's no charge to join the friendship list or post information. Suggest you include e-mail contact and telephone number to make it easy for someone to respond to your listing. If you are selling a unit, it's helpful to identify if fixed or flex.

If you don't want to participate, simply hit the reply button and mark "delete" and all your contact information will be deleted.

Thanks
Willard Rohrer

PS - If you have questions simply click the reply button on any message which will identify the listing you have a question about. If you have an interest in any listing, simply click the "Make an offer" button to send an e-mail to the person who has listed the item.

Real estate Q&A: How can I help my children avoid probate after I'm gone?

By: Gary M. Singer, Sun Sentinel

Q: I live in a condo in a 55+ community and want to help my children avoid probate when I eventually pass away. What should I do? -- Sheryle

A: This is a question asked of me many years ago by my most loyal reader, my mother. I answered her question in person at the time and will now share that answer with you because my mother passed away this week, and her foresight with this question, and the action we took, will spare us the expense and hassle of having to probate her home.

Kindly remember that everyone's situation is unique, and a newspaper column is not a substitute for the advice of an estate planning attorney.

There are three good choices depending on your situation. The first choice is a Life Estate Deed, where property owners retain ownership of the home for their lifetimes, and when they die, the home passes to their initial choice of recipients without any further action being required. Simply, once the "life-tenant" passes away, the chosen person (or people), known as the "remainderman," automatically becomes the owner. The downside to this choice is that the chosen remaindermen are "vested," meaning their interest in the property is locked in. The property owner cannot later change his or her mind, sell or even mortgage the property without the remainderman's consent.

To fix this problem, an Enhanced Life Estate Deed was developed. This type of deed became known as a "Lady Bird Deed" following an article years ago illustrating its uses by a prominent Florida attorney. The name stuck, as did the document because of its usefulness. This type of ownership is very similar to a standard life estate, but the remainderman's interest in the property is not vested, meaning the homeowner can freely change his or her mind about who takes the property afterward, and can sell or mortgage the property without anyone's consent. This flexibility can also be a downside, since some seniors are susceptible to influence and may be coerced into making changes that are not in their best interest.

The final choice is to set up a living trust. This choice provides the most flexibility and is best for people with more assets to plan for. While trusts are almost all upside, the negative is they are significantly more expensive and complicated to set up than either type of life estate deed.

As a police officer, what is the kindest thing a suspect ever said to you?

By: John Sharp, Police Captain (1993-present)

Over the years, there have been several people (suspects, offenders, witnesses, victims, etc.) who have said kind things to me. One that comes to mind is probably the most recent.

As a captain, I’m not often out on patrol and I make very few traffic stops. A few weeks ago however, I saw a vehicle traveling the wrong direction in a traffic circle. Given the danger presented, I stopped the motorist and saw the vehicle was driven by a tiny African American lady of about 65 (I am a not so tiny 55-year-old Caucasian man), and she was confused and upset by the unfamiliar traffic control device into which she had driven.

I helped get her turned around and pulled to the side of the road where we were both safe. Pursuant to Department policy, I asked her for her license, registration and proof of insurance. She paused a moment and then started looking through her purse, center console and glove compartment for the requested documentation.

Based on my experience, this suggested to me she did not have one or more of the documents I had asked her to produce. I asked her if she had a driver’s license and she admitted her license was suspended.

I couldn’t help but notice tears welling up in her eyes. I had already noticed her license plate was expired, as was her motor vehicle inspection sticker. I then asked if her automobile was insured, and she told me it was not.

In my jurisdiction, unless there are exigent circumstances, a vehicle found to be uninsured is to be towed and impounded. In addition, a motorist found to be driving under suspension may, at the officer's discretion, be arrested, and should not be permitted to drive away from the traffic stop absent exigent circumstances which mitigate against preventing the motorist from driving any further.

The lady had tears streaming down her cheeks, knowing she had a problem. She was wearing a business outfit, so I asked her where she was going, thinking I might be able to drop her off if time was a problem. She explained the previous week, she was hired by a local hospital and that day was to be her first at her new job.

She explained she had lost her home and job in August of 2016 when our area suffered through the worst flood to affect the area in modern history. Approximately 80% of the homes and businesses in our area flooded during the event. Many had never flooded before, were not in flood zones and consequently, many families and businesses were left with nothing, following the inundation. This lady was one of those.

She understood she was in trouble, and she understood despite her good intentions, she was breaking the law. But there was no anger or bitterness. In her face, I saw only resolve and determination.

She never once suggested she deserved a break. She didn’t hint at leniency. She expressed no self-pity and did not seek to shift the blame.

While I may not have shown it, I was very impressed with the way she was handling the experience.

I told the lady, whom I’ll call Ms. Smith, to have a seat in her car, turn on her air conditioner (it was about 95), and I would be back with her as quickly as possible. I then returned to my unit and checked her registration and driver’s license. I determined her license was suspended due to her inability to honor a payment plan with the DMV she had reached to resolve fines assessed to her when her insurance lapsed.

She was uninsured; her history showed over the last several years, her insurance lapsed several times, She always managed to have her insurance reinstated but administrative fees had built up over time. Her registration had expired two months earlier. However, with a suspended driver’s license, she could not renew her registration or obtain an updated motor vehicle inspection sticker.

Clearly, she was in a vicious spiral and putting her in jail or doing anything to cost her her new job would not be helpful.

I carefully considered my options, recognizing my obligation to protect and serve includes keeping people without mandatory liability insurance off of the road. Her failure to have the required insurance presented a problem for me. Under our law, were she to have an at-fault accident and it was discovered I had stopped her and failed to take the appropriate action, I could be held responsible.

If I towed her car, she would likely lose her new job which was going to pay her enough to get required insurance, take care of her suspended driver’s license and generally make her life better for the first time in two years.

As I sat there considering what to do, I suddenly remembered something. I got out of my unit, walked up to car and looked in the back seat. There, behind the front passenger seat was a rear-facing baby seat, buckled snuggly into place.

“I meant to ask you about the baby seat,” I told her.

“Oh,” she replied. “That’s for my grand baby,” she told me. “I take her to day care each morning so my daughter can make it to nursing school on time. This is our only car.”

“Do they live with you all the time.” I asked.

“Yes, sir! They’re my best friends,” she said with a smile.

I thanked her and returned to my unit. I smiled too, and thought to myself, “Exigent circumstances! Can’t tow that car if there are exigent circumstances.”

I prepared the lady a citation for driving under suspension. I hated to do it, but the only discretion we have in such cases is jail or a misdemeanor summons. I did, however, exercise my discretion and prepared a warning for the expired driver’s license and expired vehicle inspection sticker.

I then made a quick phone call before walking back to her car, ticket book in hand. As the little lady waited to hear her fate, I began. “OK, Ms. Smith, here is where we are,” I told her.

“I have to issue you a citation for driving under suspension. I have no choice. However, you’re not being arrested, only fined.”

She asked me how much the fine would be and I told her I did not know, but I had called the Clerk of Court, asked that they let her pay over a period of six months, and they agreed. I then handed her the citation and asked her to sign where indicated.

She signed and then remembered the other charges. “Is there another ticket,” she asked?

“No Ma’am,” I told her. “Apparently, I am out of tickets and don’t have time to go and get some more.”

She seemed confused and asked, “I know you have to tow my car, Captain. I was just wondering if there is any way you can let me get to work first. I can park it around back where nobody will see it and you can tow it from there, if it’s not too much trouble.”

“Well, Ms Smith, it looks like your car isn’t going to be towed today. As it turns out, there are exigent circumstances to allow me to let you keep your car. But you have to get insurance within 30 days.”

She didn’t understand, so I explained since there is an infant in their house, since they had only one car, and since that car was the child’s sole means of transportation to day care, such a situation created exigent circumstances which allowed me to decline to tow the car, provided I had a reasonable belief required insurance would be obtained within 30 days.

She assured me they would get the insurance they needed.

I wished her good luck and told her to be safe and I turned around to walk back to my unit as tears started rolling down her cheeks again. Before I could walk away, however, Ms. Smith called out to me, “Captain Sharp!”

I turned back to her. “I don’t know if you’re allowed or not, but would it be OK if I gave you a hug?”

I told her I would love a hug, and it was the best hug of the day.

I’m sorry it took so long to answer your question, but, “Would it be OK if I gave you a hug?” was one of the kindest things a suspect ever said to me. Thank you for your question!

Not sure the previous owner but think it was a savings and loan building converted to Nixon Newspapers headquarters, and daily Wabash Plain Dealer with re-plated Times Star for mail subscribers.

Note the PLAIN DEALER name carved above the brass front doors and clock* outside at the corner.

The press was in the basement as was newsprint storage which went under the sidewalks on Canal and Wabash streets.

The safe door for secured deposit boxes was never closed and was permanent since its weight would collapse the floor if an attempt to remove it was planned.

Entering the main front door, you passed the stairs to the basement and the office on the left was Nixon Newspapers headquarters for Wabash, Peru and Michigan City newspapers, Nixon Newspaper Associates, Nixon Newspapers, Inc., and Nixon Newspapers Benevolent Association, Inc.

The office to the right was occupied by Joe Nixon (my father) who was General Manager and the middle lobby divided the teller stations so on the right the Plain Dealer classified advertising and subscription operations and on the left, all general administration work for the newspaper operations was conducted. Willard Rohrer occupied the front office to manage all business purchasing, banking, insurance, payroll, taxes, union/labor agreements.

The far balcony offices were for the display advertising sales people when in the office and the front balcony was for the Publisher, Eugenia Hubbard Nixon Honeywell, who was seldom present at the office.

Beyond the far balcony, stairs to the upper floor and exit on Wabash Street may have influenced visitors dealing with the news department or the daily make up production of "hot metal" typesetting for the news and advertising content of the daily printed product.

*The clock was manually operated winding it every 8 days. It was astounding how many people would notice if and when the clock was not on time.

Scott Sander came “Back Home Again” to Indiana in 2005, joining News8 as a nightside reporter on WISH-TV and the first anchor of our 10 o’clock news on MyNDY-TV 23. He moved up to the Daybreak team in 2007.

Scott says his goal for each story and every newscast is to, “Get it right, write it well, and deliver it clearly.”

That’s been true through more than 30 years in broadcasting, delivering award-winning coverage of countless stories of local and national impact.

He reported LIVE along river banks during history-shaping flooding in Missouri… on the campaign trail as presidential contenders criss-crossed Iowa… from the grounds of Columbine High School within minutes of the tragedy outside Denver… and all over Central Indiana, leading coverage of most every important story over the last 17 years in the state he has always called ‘home’, no matter where he has lived.

Scott was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, and was raised all over the map – including stops on the east side of Indianapolis, the western suburbs of Chicago, a neighborhood north of Atlanta, Georgia, and eventually back to Central Indiana, where he graduated from Carmel High School in 1990.

He works to help several community organizations, including The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Indianapolis Fire Department, the Indiana Historical Society, and Carmel Education Foundation.

Scott and his wife, Tammy, have two kids, two cats, and one trusty travel trailer that they haul to campgrounds all over the country. Scott likes to fish, loves to read, and plays golf poorly but enthusiastically.

He has also won 10 Emmy awards, but Tammy makes him keep them in the attic.

She does allow him to display the crystal award given as a member of the Carmel High School Alumni Hall of Fame, but mostly just to embarass the kids.

Wabash (IN) Plain Dealer: Merv Hendricks

Custom classified advertising‏‏
From:       Merv Hendricks (mhendricks2@isugw.indstate.edu)
Sent: Tue 11/11/08 12:13 PM
To:         Don Nixon II (dmnixonii@hotmail.com)

Hi, dmn (been a while since I typed that),

It will be next week or the week after, though. I am tied up in editing and designing an 80th anniversary publication for the Hoosier State Press Association — you remember it — and I have until the weekend to finish a 64-page tab. I have 20 pages finished right now, so that tells you what I will be doing with my hours away from my day job this week and weekend. I have been so busy with stuff that I must admit that I have not even looked at the links you sent. I will, however, before we meet by phone and will share them with the group.

And while I have your eyes, Don, let me say that I never appreciated how good Nixon Newspapers was and how good you were as a publisher until some years after I was gone. My days in Wabash, as I look back with white hair, were the best of my career. Yes, I was in some ways a bigger dog in Terre Haute at the papers here, but it never was as much fun, it was never as good of a culture, it was never as positive a place as was Wabash. When I think about a paper being connected with its community, I think of Wabash in those days when NNI was in charge. I really felt that we in the PD newsroom — and the PD in every department -- got to know the community and appreciate it, even though we had a changing cast of characters.

I also know now, which I didn’t know then, how much you let us, encouraged us to effectively experiment. Take the Saturday tab for instance. You gave us a toy and let us play with it. That was gutsy, given that we were all pretty much 20-something snots.

I also recall what I call big ideas that you and Ray foisted upon us — the Sunday paper covering the ceremony of the Wabash light, Ray and Harold’s trip to the Jimmy Carter White House, the Jane Pauley tab, the Bicentennial edition, the 1979 anniversary edition, the Ray Kroc tab. That proved to me that it did not take a major metro to do major metro kinds of projects. Hard work — damn straight! — but rewarding, educational and, after the pain ceased, points of pride.

For all of that and more memories whose brain cells have died, I thank you, first. I thank your late, great dad. And as I often have, I thank Ray, who I generally call or e-mail on Sept. 15, the day I started at the PD (1976).

I regret I was not more appreciative at the time and that I was often a problem in my behavior. If I could take back anything in my professional life, it would not be mistakes or bad news judgments, it would be bad behavior. It’s a wonder I wasn’t fired over and over and over. I deserved it too many times. Thank you for your support.

I still have, BTW, notes you sent me, usually written in blue grease pencil if I recall correctly, complimenting the newsroom on one thing or another. Those are still meaningful and will stay in my files as long as I live.

More than you wanted to know, dmn, but I never could write short!

Peace, love and rock-and-roll,

-- Merv

PS Now comes the hard part...getting it done...dmn follow the journey with us. The web site below was an effort to model local landing pages for every zip code with links to local activities.

I designed a custom program for unlimited content for local news and activities. It was modeled after the classified advertising section of the newspaper so it was easy to find specific items or businesses. Still waiting patiently to make progress. See the category following...and click:
